Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has claimed that his national team would defeat Spain if the 2026 FIFA World Cup final were played again today.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing journalist Gaston Edul, the 2022 World Cup winner expressed confidence in Argentina's ability to overcome the Spanish side despite their defeat in this year's final.
"Spain are a great team, but I feel that if we played them today, we would beat them. I had more respect for France in 2022 than I did for Spain at the World Cup," Martinez said.
The goalkeeper's comments come after Argentina suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute, securing the world title for Spain and denying Argentina the opportunity to retain the trophy they won in Qatar four years earlier.
In the 2022 final, Argentina defeated France on penalties following a dramatic 3-3 draw after extra time, with Martinez playing a decisive role in his country's triumph.
His latest remarks underline Argentina's continued confidence despite losing their world crown to Spain.
