Since 2023, Ebrar Karakurt – one of the brightest stars of modern volleyball – has played for Russia’s Lokomotiv Kaliningrad. Now, after two unforgettable seasons, the Turkish sensation is saying goodbye.
Karakurt didn’t just take the Russian league by storm with her powerful performances, but also captivated hearts with her raw emotions and passion, Idman.biz reports.
For two consecutive seasons, she was the league's top scorer – leaving a lasting impression with her victories in both the national championship and cup.
In a heartfelt interview with Russia’s Chempionat.com, Ebrar opened up about her journey, challenges, and dreams.
– Ebrar, you’re leaving Russia as both national champion and cup winner. On top of that, you were named MVP of the Cup Final. Could there be a better way to say farewell to the Russian Super League?
– I totally agree! Ending the season with two titles and an MVP award is the perfect farewell. Every moment I spent with Lokomotiv means a lot to me. Finishing the season on such a high note is truly fulfilling. This season showed that when we stand united and fight to the end, we can achieve incredible things.
– Ebi, your tears after the final surprised many fans. You’re usually seen as strong and even tough on the court, but this was a different side of you. Does this happen often?
– People see me as emotional and maybe even a bit rough on the court, but deep down, I’m very sensitive. Last year, we came so close to winning the championship but couldn’t make it. This year, when we fell behind again in the final, not many believed we could turn it around. But we did. We gave an incredible team performance and made the impossible possible. When we finally won, I honestly couldn’t believe it. My emotions overwhelmed me – and I just cried. It was a very meaningful moment for me.
– Looking at your personal stats, you’ve been the league’s top scorer for two years in a row. Last season you scored 794 points; this season, you broke your own record with 849. How do you maintain that level? Any secrets you can share?
– There’s no secret formula (smiles). It’s all about hard work and consistency. I try to be fully prepared for every match and focus 100%. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is – I always aim to push my limits and give everything I have for my team.
– How would you describe your two years in Russia? Which moments stand out the most?
– The first year was all about adapting – to a new culture, language, and environment. The second year was a leap forward. I grew a lot, both as an athlete and as a person. Russia taught me resilience and gave me unforgettable memories.
– In a past interview, you said your two biggest goals were to win the Russian championship and Olympic gold. You’ve achieved the first. What about the second? Do you have any other dreams?
– We gave our all at the 2024 Olympics but finished fourth. That was a heartbreak for us. Still, I believe this is just the beginning of a long journey. Our only goal for the next Olympics is to win gold. That’s my ultimate dream at the national level – no compromises.
At the club level, winning the championship with Lokomotiv was very special to me. I felt I owed it to the team. We share a deep emotional bond, and I’m proud we achieved it together. Now, I want to aim even higher – win a continental title, lift the Champions League trophy, become world champion. There are no limits to my dreams, and I want to keep chasing success. My dreams keep my spirit and passion alive.
