During Azerbaijan’s volleyball boom, when clubs brought in many of the world’s top stars, Nicole Davis was one of the brightest names. In the 2010/11 season, the American libero played for “Lokomotiv,” reaching the final of the Challenge Cup with the team. The two-time Olympic silver medalist and world champion spoke to Idman.Biz about her time in Baku and shared what she is doing now.
Nicole, many years have passed since your time in Azerbaijan. How do you remember the season with Lokomotiv?
It was a very warm and fulfilling stage of my career. Your country was experiencing a true volleyball boom then – strong leagues, passionate fans, and an atmosphere full of energy. Lokomotiv was an excellent team, and I felt part of an ambitious project. We went a long way and managed to reach the final of the Challenge Cup – it was a special achievement.
What stands out most about your time in Baku?
The people. Azerbaijanis were incredibly hospitable. I felt support not only within the club but also outside of it. Baku is a beautiful and lively city, and I enjoyed exploring it in my free time. I only have pleasant memories.
How did that season impact your career?
It gave me confidence. That was a period when I worked a lot on consistency and leadership on the court. Playing in Azerbaijan helped me become a more mature volleyball player. International experiences like that make an athlete more adaptable and teach them to adjust to different playing styles and cultures.
You’ve played in many countries. How strong was the Super League at that time?
The level was really high. The league had many foreign stars, which made every match a tough challenge. Teams were competitive, and games were often intense, sometimes decided in a tie-break. It was an excellent period for the development of Azerbaijani volleyball.
What are you doing now?
I continue working in volleyball, but more off the court. I dedicate my time to coaching, consulting, working with young athletes, and developing mental training. It’s important for me to share my experience and help athletes grow not only physically but also psychologically. Volleyball remains an important part of my life.
Do you follow the performance of Azerbaijani clubs today?
From time to time, yes. Volleyball in Azerbaijan left a lasting mark on my life, so I’m always interested in seeing how the league develops, which players join, and how the level grows. I always wish your clubs success.
Would you like to visit Baku again?
With great pleasure! It’s a city worth returning to. If there’s an opportunity – whether for a major volleyball event or just travel – I would gladly come.
