Victoria Mboko shocks Osaka to win first WTA title at Canadian Open

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko stunned four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to claim her first WTA Tour title at the Canadian Open in Montreal. The 18-year-old wild card, ranked No. 85, fought back from a set down and a 0-3 deficit to complete a dream run on home soil.

Idman.biz, citing BBC, reports that en route to the title, Mboko defeated Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Osaka, all major champions. “These past two weeks have been insane,” said Mboko. “I never imagined winning the whole thing.”

Osaka, continuing her comeback from maternity leave, praised her opponent after the match: “Victoria played really well. She did amazing.”

Mboko now sets her sights on the U.S. Open, saying she's ready for the ups and downs: “It’s all about enjoying the process.”
