The major “Sumo Expo 2025” event was held at the “Wase Exhibition Hall” in Osaka, Japan.
Professional athletes and official representatives from only five countries among the 158 participating nations, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Mongolia, Senegal, and Japan, gathered at this magnificent event, Idman.biz reports.
The main goal of the event was to promote sumo wrestling worldwide and increase global interest in the World Championship to be held in Baku in 2026. Azerbaijan was represented at this prestigious expo by the Japanese Martial Arts and Culture Association. The association’s vice president, Ulvi Agamirov, gave a speech, presented the official PR video of the championship, introduced the mascot AZUMO to the public, and invited everyone to Baku.
Also attending the event were Azerbaijan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan Gursel Ismayilzada, director of the Azerbaijan Pavilion at the Osaka Expo Avaz Muradov, and his team. One of the highlights was the participation of Azerbaijani sumo team member Javid Yusifov in the sumo championship held among Japan’s 12 most prestigious universities. In the open weight category, he defeated the champion from the Japanese universities in his first match, proudly representing our country.
“Sumo Expo 2025” served as an invaluable platform for expanding international relations in both sports and culture. The event significantly contributed to strengthening Azerbaijan’s position on the world sports stage.
