Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sports, Farid Gayibov, has emphasized the important role of the Republican Olympic Sports Lyceum (ROSL), located in Baku's Bakikhanov settlement, in developing the country's future sporting champions.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the minister made the remarks while speaking to journalists about the institution's recent renovation and plans for its further development.
"This lyceum has been operating for many years. Sports federations also participated in the renovation process. We have additional plans for the next stage. The lyceum is an important educational institution for the development of sport.
"Athletes in wrestling, judo and boxing have trained here. Among them are Olympic and world champions. Currently, 450 students from different regions of Azerbaijan study at the lyceum. I believe the number of Olympic and world champions will continue to grow," Gayibov said.
The renovation project included major upgrades to the freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and judo training halls. The dormitory, dining facility and classrooms were also reconstructed to improve conditions for young athletes.
Established in Baku in 1963, the Republican Olympic Sports Lyceum has played a significant role in Azerbaijan's sports education system for more than six decades. The institution also operates a branch in the Gakh district.
The lyceum currently offers training in five sports: freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, boxing, judo and football.
Including its Gakh branch, the institution has a total capacity of 700 students. Its facilities include sports training areas, residential accommodation and educational buildings.
In addition, the lyceum operates a training camp in Nabran, where athletes can participate in specialized training sessions.
Students are provided with three meals a day, allowing them to combine academic education with intensive sports preparation.
The planned improvements are expected to further strengthen the institution's ability to develop young talent and prepare future representatives of Azerbaijan for major international competitions.
