The World Judo Championships in Budapest continue to bring success for Team Azerbaijan, as Eljan Hajiyev secured the second medal for the national team.
Two Azerbaijani judokas competed today in the men’s -90 kg category, Idman.biz reports.
Vugar Talibov faced Luka Maisuradze (Georgia) in the 1/32 final but was eliminated after a tough bout.
Eljan Hajiyev, who was seeded and started directly from the 1/16 final, defeated Nurbek Murtuzoyev (Uzbekistan), followed by another victory over Peng-Yu Chen (Chinese Taipei).
In the quarterfinals, Hajiyev overcame Adam Kopesky (Czech Republic), advancing to the semifinals, where he faced Japan’s Goki Tayima. Despite a strong run, Hajiyev fell short in this match.
However, he bounced back confidently in the bronze medal bout against Kristofer Kaljulaid (Estonia), securing victory and climbing onto the third step of the podium.
This is Azerbaijan’s second medal at the championship, following Zelim Tckaev’s bronze in the -81 kg category.
