Veronika Zhilina’s potential switch of sporting citizenship to represent Azerbaijan in international figure skating continues to draw attention.
Idman.biz, via RIA Novosti Sport, reports that prominent Azerbaijani businessman Emin Aghalarov commented on the situation, underlining both the skater’s commitment and the hurdles ahead.
“Veronika Zhilina is now a resident of our country. I know for certain that she wants to represent Azerbaijan,” Aghalarov stated.
He acknowledged the difficulties involved in the process but emphasized its importance:
“Unfortunately, she’s been out of competition for nearly two years, and we wouldn’t want her to miss the opportunity to compete at the Olympics. I’m confident in her professionalism. However, I put more trust in the opinion of two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko, who has coached Veronika and believes in her potential.”
The Russian Figure Skating Federation (RFSF) had previously denied Zhilina permission to change her national affiliation. Nevertheless, the International Skating Union (ISU) is expected to review her case on July 4–5.
If approved, Zhilina could pave the way for a historic Olympic debut under the Azerbaijani flag.
