Former Macarthur Bulls players Clayton Lewis and Kearyn Baccus have been fined A$10,000 ($6,600) each for their involvement in a betting scandal, but avoided criminal convictions.
Idman.biz, citing Reuters, reports that the duo admitted receiving payments from club captain Ulises Davila to deliberately earn yellow cards in several A-League matches in late 2023.
Both players were sentenced in a Sydney court on Wednesday and will serve two-year conditional release orders, allowing them to remain in the community under supervision. Davila, a Mexican national, faces nine charges and is due in court on Thursday.
Their sentencing follows the case of former Western United midfielder Riku Danzaki, who was fined A$5,000 and convicted of fraud for similar conduct, highlighting ongoing integrity issues in the A-League.
