Sevinj Jafarzade: "One of our greatest dreams is to play a match at the Khankendi stadium"

“First, I want to note that being in those places not only filled us with pride but also saddened us, because the traces of our martyrs are there. I pray for mercy for all our martyrs and for healing for our veterans.”

These words were spoken by Sevinj Jafarzade, captain of the Azerbaijan women’s national football team, in an interview with AZERTAC while discussing their visit to the territories liberated from occupation as part of the “Victory Road” social project, Idman.biz reports.

The team’s forward shared her impressions of the trip: “I have watched the testimonies of our compatriots who were taken prisoner during the First Karabakh War. I have listened to their stories and, as a citizen, closely followed the terrible events that happened to our people in Karabakh. While I was there, those moments and the bravery of our special forces, climbing the cliffs by hand to liberate Shusha, came vividly to my mind. It was a very majestic and proud feeling. The traces of Armenian vandalism are clearly visible in the Fuzuli and Agdam districts. I would say that even the trees in those lands were destroyed by the Armenians. Seeing this deeply saddens us all. But it is encouraging that, under the orders of President Ilham Aliyev, restoration work is underway in Karabakh, and life is returning there. Seeing newly established villages and people returning is a source of pride. I also felt a sense of kinship and warmth there. We are a strong and brave nation. We have proven ourselves in every field. Sometimes it takes time, but we have always achieved our goals. Our greatest victory as a nation is the liberation of Karabakh from occupation.”

She also expressed hope that the national team will soon play a match at the stadium in Khankendi: “This is one of our greatest dreams. I hope that the relevant authorities will support holding our national team’s games in Karabakh, in Khankendi. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who made this victory possible, who returned our lands, and who sacrificed their health, blood, and lives for this cause.”
