In South America, the second leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 between Independiente and Universidad de Chile (1:1) was suspended due to mass riots in the stands.
The match in Argentina saw the teams exchange goals in the first half, Idman.biz reports.
During halftime, the situation in the stadium suddenly escalated. About 100 Independiente fans attacked the section of the visiting team. In response, Chilean supporters began throwing seats, bottles, flares, and tile fragments at them. This led to large-scale fights in the stands, turning into a chase against Universidad fans in various sections of the stadium.
Videos circulating on social media show two Argentine fans beating a 14-year-old Universidad supporter with metal rods.
Although the police tried to control the situation, their intervention had limited effect. The match referee, Gustavo Teixeira, decided to suspend the game in the 62nd minute and evacuate the teams from the field.
As a result of the riots, three people died, and about ten fans were hospitalized. One Chilean fan is in serious condition after falling from a height while trying to escape aggressive Independiente supporters. After the match, the police detained over 300 Universidad de Chile fans.
CONMEBOL’s Disciplinary Committee will soon make a decision regarding the incidents during the match and determine sanctions against the clubs. At the time the match was stopped, Universidad de Chile was leading 2:1 on aggregate against Independiente.
