England's women's national football team was subjected to abuse on social media last Sunday.
During the final of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, around 3,000 posts containing “aggressive or concerning content” were shared about the England team, Idman.biz reports.
The UK’s online threat monitoring service, Moonshot, analyzed violent threats and abusive language directed at England players and head coach Sarina Wiegman. The study revealed that most social media platforms failed to remove this abusive content.
The company reviewed 73,400 posts across 30 social media platforms during the final. Of these, 3,000 were identified as containing “overtly hostile or concerning content,” including “ambiguous offensive language” and misogyny.
Moonshot reported 95 posts, those specifically targeting individual players or the coach, to the platforms. However, 99% of these posts were not removed.
Of these 95 posts, 42% contained racist abuse, 29% misogyny, 12% sexual objectification, and 11% were related to sexual orientation.
The most targeted player was 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang, who was named the tournament’s best young player and came on in the second half of the final. Most of the abuse directed at her was related to her skin color.
