VAR rules set for major overhaul ahead of World Cup

Possible changes to football rules regarding the implementation of the VAR system are currently on the agenda.

Idman.biz, citing The Times, reports that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) may expand the authority of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

Specifically, VAR referees may be granted permission to intervene in incidents involving second yellow cards and incorrectly awarded corner kicks.

The rule changes related to the VAR system have already been discussed by football’s top governing bodies. However, for the changes to take effect, they must be approved at IFAB's annual meeting scheduled for March next year. If approved, the new rules will come into force on June 1, ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

At the same time, penalty rules may also be amended. Under the new proposal, if a goalkeeper saves a penalty, the play will be considered over, and the attacking team will not be allowed to score on a rebound.
