Roman Grygorchuk: "This is a tough decision for Azerbaijani football"

“The conditions created in Gabala are truly magnificent. I can’t imagine that there would be no demand in return.”

This was stated by Roman Grygorchuk, former Ukrainian head coach of Gabala, in an interview with Teleqraf as he commented on the decision to limit the operations of the club’s academy, Idman.biz reports.

The 60-year-old specialist said that such a move would be a negative step for Azerbaijani football: “I wasn’t aware of this, so I can’t give a detailed comment. However, restricting the activity of such an academy is a serious blow for the country’s football. Gabala is a well-established club where everything is well-organized. Excellent conditions have been created for both players and coaches. This is truly sad news.”

Grygorchuk also took the opportunity to congratulate Gabala on returning to the Premier League: “My time in Gabala remains a special memory. All of my recollections of Azerbaijan are positive. I have many friends and acquaintances there, and I deeply respect them. My warmest regards to everyone! I’m aware of Gabala’s promotion back to the top flight and I’m very happy about it. I wholeheartedly congratulate everyone. I’m confident that Gabala will strive for the highest goals. I wish them the best!”

Grygorchuk served as Gabala’s head coach for 3.5 years starting from early 2015. Under his leadership, the club won two silver (2016/2017, 2017/2018) and two bronze (2014/2015, 2015/2016) medals in the Premier League and reached the Azerbaijan Cup final twice (2016/2017, 2017/2018). Gabala also reached the UEFA Europa League group stage in the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons under his management. Most recently, he coached Neftchi at the beginning of last season.
