Nadir Nabiyev: “I strongly believe Rashad Sadygov can succeed with the national team”

“Hungary played better than Azerbaijan, and that’s understandable,” said former Azerbaijani national team striker Nadir Nabiyev in an interview with Sportal.az.

Reflecting on the recent performances of the national team, Nabiyev noted, Idman.biz reports:

"Hungarian players compete in stronger leagues and bigger clubs. We could have avoided the loss, though. While it’s not accurate to say we played well, the performance wasn’t too disappointing either. We even had a chance to beat Latvia — the opportunities were there, we just failed to convert them. If we want results, something needs to change, and we must openly discuss what that is."

Nabiyev also assessed the work of national team head coach Fernando Santos:

"Santos is a well-known coach with proven success, but based on our recent results, things haven't gone well. It’s true that the players seemed more motivated and determined in the last few games, but that alone isn’t enough to win. It’s becoming clear that we are unlikely to achieve success under Santos. That’s why a timely and correct decision is crucial. If there is going to be a change in management, the new coach should be local. I strongly believe Rashad Sadygov has what it takes to succeed with the national team."
