Head coach of Neftchi’s women’s team, Siyasat Asgarov, has shared his thoughts on winning the Azerbaijan Women’s Championship and securing a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
As reported by Idman.biz, Asgarov told Report that although they were champions last season as well, they faced disappointment in the international arena.
He noted that the only real challenge this season came against Sumgayit, saying:
“This season was slightly different due to the smaller number of teams. Still, the Neftchi club management's growing support for women’s football played a major role in our success. Although we faced some difficulties against Sumgayit, we won both matches and clinched the title. That’s what matters. Last year we also became champions, but unfortunately, we didn’t achieve much in the UEFA Champions League. I hope luck will be on our side this time and we’ll get a favorable group. Most importantly, we aim to earn coefficient points for our country.”
Asgarov emphasized that advancing from the group stage is the club’s main target this year:
“We have two league games left before we give the team a break. The draw is expected in June. Once we know our opponents, we’ll make detailed plans with the management. We’ll then begin training camp preparations. We want to build an even stronger squad and achieve our goals. I don’t foresee many roster changes—just a few reinforcements in key positions. In the Champions League, only group winners advance to the playoff round. Winning in the playoffs means reaching the main tournament. Our key objective is to get out of the group.”
After 12 matches, Neftchi tops the AFFA Girls' High League with 36 points, holding a 10-point lead over Sumgayit, with 3 rounds left in the 2024/25 season.
