What separates Qarabag from PSG? – ANALYSIS

A few days ago, the IFFHS announced the longest away unbeaten runs in the “Big Five” leagues. The list includes European giants that have earned points in at least 25 consecutive away matches.

Idman.biz has reviewed the history of the Azerbaijani championships and identified the clubs with similar achievements.

In the IFFHS table, led by PSG with 39 games, there are minimum 25-match streaks — something no Azerbaijani club has achieved. In other words, if our country were part of the “Big Five” or if the IFFHS had published a list covering all of Europe, our clubs wouldn’t have made the cut. So, who are our record holders?

Absolute record from Qarabag

The Azerbaijani record was set not long ago. In April 2023, Qarabag’s dominance in away matches came to an end. Gurban Gurbanov’s team earned points in 24 consecutive away games. During this period, the team achieved 20 wins and 4 draws. The streak, which lasted about 18 months, began after a defeat to Sabail and continued until the loss to Sabah. This series is 15 matches short of PSG’s “Big Five” record.

Shamkir’s record that lasted over 21 years

Before Qarabag broke the record two years ago, the best run belonged to Shamkir. At the turn of the century, between 1999-2001, the western side denied home teams victory. Shamkir played 23 such consecutive matches, winning 15 and drawing 8. That streak, which started after a loss to Qarabag, was only surpassed by the Aghdam side more than 21 years later.

From Tovuz to Tovuz
The third-longest away unbeaten run in history belongs to Kapaz. The Ganja club earned points in 18 consecutive away games between 1993-1995. The streak started after a defeat to Turan and ended with another loss to the same Tovuz side. During that period, Kapaz recorded 10 wins and 8 draws.

Qarabag’s hat-trick

Three of the five longest streaks belong to Qarabag. In addition to their 24-match streak, the Aghdam club earned points in 17 consecutive away matches between 2019-2021. After losing to Sumgayit, Gurbanov’s team recorded 9 wins and 8 draws, until the run was broken by a defeat to Neftchi.
