FIFA has announced disciplinary action against Cristiano Ronaldo following the red card he received in the Round 5 World Cup 2026 qualifying match against Ireland.
According to Idman.Biz, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to suspend the Portuguese forward for three matches.
It should be noted that one match has already been served—Ronaldo did not play in the last group match against Armenia. The remaining two matches of the suspension have been deferred for one year. FIFA emphasized that the punishment is not canceled but postponed. In the event of another serious violation during the probation period, the remaining two matches will automatically apply to Portugal’s next official match, and additional sanctions may still be imposed.
Ronaldo received the red card for elbowing Irish defender Dara O’Shea in the back, after which Portugal lost 0:2.
The incident drew significant media and fan attention, sparking widespread discussion about FIFA’s disciplinary practices in such situations.
