Individual sabre and epee competitions have kicked off at the 32nd Summer World University Games held in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region.
According to special correspondent of Idman.biz in Germany, Azerbaijani epee fencers Aynur Guliyeva (4 wins) and Nazila Rahimova (3 wins) successfully passed the group stage and advanced to the play-offs.
Khadija Hasanli, who managed only one win in the group stage, was eliminated from the competition. In the bout for a spot in the round of 32, Nazila Rahimova lost 13:15 to neutral athlete Polina Khaertdinova. Aynur Guliyeva was defeated 12:15 by Belgian fencer Anne Bultynck.
Our women’s epee team will compete in the team event on July 20.
In the men's individual sabre event, Magsud Huseynli, Saleh Mammadov, and Murad Akbarov represented Azerbaijan. Murad Akbarov was eliminated early after registering just one win in the group stage. Saleh Mammadov, with three victories, lost 13:15 in the play-offs to Australian fencer Arnav Raja.
Magsud Huseynli eliminated his Hong Kong opponent Hoi Chun Chang (15:13) in the play-offs but lost 8:15 to Kazakhstan’s sabreur Bekhultan Abzhal in the match for a place in the Round of 16.
Our men’s sabre fencers will compete in the team event on July 20.
