The Azerbaijan Cycling Federation (ACF) has held another meeting of its Executive Committee to review progress in developing cycling nationwide, assess international achievements and outline future priorities.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing the federation, the meeting was opened by ACF President Zaur Akhundov, who introduced the agenda before inviting First Vice-President Sahib Alakbarov to present a report on the federation's activities.
Alakbarov explained that since the appointment of new leadership in May 2025, the federation has focused on restoring Azerbaijani cycling to its pre-COVID-19 level.
Under the 2025–2028 Development Strategy, approved on June 4, 2025, extensive work has been carried out to restore the federation's infrastructure and equipment.
The renovation included the damaged concrete surface of the cycling track, spectator stands, a mini-football pitch, heating facilities and several vehicles belonging to the federation.
A major achievement highlighted during the meeting was the successful organization of the Baku–Khankendi Azerbaijan Cycling Race, a UCI 2.1-category international competition held from May 10 to 14, 2026.
The five-day event brought together 24 teams from 20 countries, with its route passing through 21 cities and districts of Azerbaijan.
According to the federation, the race was broadcast live by Eurosport in 19 languages across 190 countries, reaching tens of millions of viewers worldwide.
The federation also cited an official Eurosport report indicating that the event's promotional video alone attracted more than 20 million viewers. Additional coverage was provided by Eurosport, Euronews and CBC Sport.
During the competition, visits to the federation's Instagram page exceeded two million for the first time.
To support the event, 25 new vehicles and additional equipment were purchased for participating teams.
Executive Vice-President Fikrat Huseynov also reported significant progress in developing youth cycling across Azerbaijan.
According to Huseynov, 22 cycling sections have been established in 18 cities and districts, with more than 500 children currently participating in training programs.
The activities of the Republican Specialized Children and Youth Cycling School of Olympic Reserve have also been revitalized.
With support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Science and Education and the Confederation of Trade Unions, professional coaches have been selected and provided with specialized training.
More than 900 bicycles and protective helmets have been distributed to young cyclists at these sections, as well as educational institutions in Ganja, Mingachevir, Lankaran, Khankendi and Zangilan.
Looking ahead, Alakbarov identified regional development, greater participation among children and teenagers, the establishment of additional cycling sections and improved competitiveness at international events as the federation's main priorities.
The Executive Committee also approved Ali Mammadov as the federation's new secretary general.
In addition, regulations on maintaining a safe sporting environment and ensuring athlete safety were formally adopted during the meeting.
