The women’s national teams of Azerbaijan and Armenia will meet today in the seventh round of the World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand.
İdman.Biz looks back at the history of meetings between the two teams at major official team competitions played with classical time controls – the Chess Olympiad and the European Team Chess Championship.
Ahead of their clash in Samarkand, the teams have faced each other 15 times in these competitions. The match record is perfectly balanced: Azerbaijan have won six encounters, Armenia have also won six, while three ended in draws. However, Azerbaijan hold the advantage in total board points, 27-25.
The rivalry began at the 1992 European Team Championship in Debrecen, where Azerbaijan won 1.5-0.5. Five years later at the European Championship in Pula, Armenia took revenge by the same score.
The teams then met regularly at Chess Olympiads. Armenia recorded 2-1 victories in both 1998 and 2000, before Azerbaijan responded with a convincing 2.5-0.5 win at the 2002 Olympiad in Bled. Armenia came out on top again in 2004, winning 2-1.
Azerbaijan suffered their heaviest defeat in the rivalry at the 2008 Olympiad in Dresden, losing 0-4. However, that remains Armenia’s most recent victory over Azerbaijan in classical team competitions.
Since 2009, Azerbaijan’s women have gone seven consecutive matches without defeat against Armenia. The teams drew 2-2 at the 2009 European Team Championship, before Azerbaijan won 2.5-1.5 at the 2012 Olympiad. Further 2-2 draws followed at the 2015 European Championship and the 2018 Olympiad. At the 2019 European Team Championship in Batumi, Azerbaijan again prevailed 2.5-1.5.
Azerbaijan’s biggest victory in the history of the rivalry came at the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai. The team defeated Armenia 4-0, winning all four games. It was Armenia’s heaviest defeat in head-to-head meetings with Azerbaijan. The official Olympiad report also described the match as the most one-sided encounter among the leading boards in that round.
The most recent meeting before Samarkand took place at the 2025 European Team Championship, where Azerbaijan won 3-1.
Therefore, ahead of today’s match at the 2026 Olympiad, the classical head-to-head record stands at 15 meetings: six victories for Azerbaijan, six for Armenia and three draws. Azerbaijan have not lost to Armenia since 2008 and have won four of the last seven encounters, with the other three ending in draws.
It should also be noted that the teams met at the 2021 Women’s World Team Championship in Sitges, where the match ended 2-2. However, that tournament was played with a rapid time control, so the encounter is not included in the classical statistics.
