Azerbaijani youth chess players won three medals at the European Championship held in Budva, Montenegro.
According to Idman.biz, in the 14-year-old boys’ category, our representative Khagan Ahmad scored 7.5 points and claimed first place.
After nine rounds, two players had the same score. Based on tie-breaks, Khagan Ahmad was ranked above Armenian player Tigran Ambartsumyan, whom he had defeated in the 6th round, and was declared the European champion among 116 participants.
In the 10-year-old girls’ category, Mehriban Ahmadli scored 7.5 points in nine rounds, earning the silver medal. In the 16-year-old girls’ category, Maryam Agaverdiyeva won the bronze medal with 7 points from nine games.
Two more Azerbaijani players finished in the top five. Rustam Rustamov competed in the 16-year-old boys’ category, and Kenan Babasoy in the 8-year-old boys’ category, both sharing 2nd–5th places.
With one gold, one silver, and one bronze, Azerbaijan ranked 5th in the team standings among 48 countries.
During the closing ceremony, medals, trophies, and diplomas were awarded to the winners. The national anthem of Azerbaijan was played in honor of Khagan Ahmad, the gold medalist in the 14-year-old boys’ category.
In total, 1,169 chess players from 48 countries participated in the tournament.
