Nijat Huseynov: "I went to the fight with Armenia only for victory"

"I am happy that I won the title of European Champion for the second time and defended my title. I managed to climb to the top of the podium again."

Idman.biz reports that Nijat Huseynov, keeping the European Champion title among under-22 boxers, told the press service of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation in Budva, Montenegro.

The athlete, who won the title of the continent's strongest for the second time thanks to his confident performance in the weight class of 51 kg, evaluated his path to success. The 19-year-old boxer said that his main goal before the competition was to sing the Azerbaijani anthem again: "Before the championship, I expected to become the European Champion for the second time. Last year I was the winner of the competition in Croatia. I was telling myself that I should be the champion this year as well. My goal was a gold medal and I got it."

According to Huseynov, his most difficult fight in the competition was in the semi-finals: "I finished all my fights with a unanimous decision of the judges - with a 5:0 victory. In the semi-final fight, I had a moment of excitement with Semih Gumus (Turkiye). But in the end, I still won confidently."

The European Champion won with the score of 5:0 in the final match against Armenian Rudolf Garboyan. The member of the team said that he went into this battle comfortably: "When I look at the semi-groups after the draw, I will inform you that I will face an Armenian in the final. Because he was placed in a weak subgroup. Since I saw myself in the final from the first day and believed in it, I was fully prepared psychologically for that fight. "I put all my troubles in front of my eyes and entered the ring only for victory, and after winning, I sang the Azerbaijani national anthem."

It should be noted that the Azerbaijani national team won 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the U-22 European Championship.
