New Scotland U21 head coach Tony Docherty has spoken about the upcoming European Championship qualifying matches against Azerbaijan and Bulgaria.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the 55-year-old believes his team still have a chance of reaching the play-offs.
Docherty said Scotland must win their final two matches and hope that the Czech Republic drop points.
"We have a small chance of qualifying. We will do everything we can to win both games. The results will also affect which pot we are in for the next qualifying campaign – Pot 3 or Pot 4. So, in any case, we have to beat Azerbaijan and Bulgaria," the head coach said.
Seven uncapped players have been included in Docherty's first Scotland U21 squad. The coach stressed that selection for the national team is based on players' performances.
"Selection for the national team is entirely performance-based. A good example is a young player who has been performing very well at that level, and I think he deserves to be rewarded for it," Docherty said, referring to the call-up of Kyle Glasgow.
Scotland U21 will host Azerbaijan at Rugby Park in Kilmarnock on September 30 before travelling to face Bulgaria on October 6.
Portugal lead Group B with 19 points, while the Czech Republic are second with 14. Scotland and Bulgaria have 11 points each and occupy third and fourth places respectively. Azerbaijan are fifth with six points after seven matches, while Gibraltar are bottom without a point.
Scotland currently trail second-placed Czech Republic by three points.
