Azerbaijan will fight without leaders in the license tournament

The number of athletes who will perform at the World Athletics Indoor Championship to be held in Baku has been determined.

According to the information provided by the general secretary of the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation, Maharram Sultanzade to Idman.biz, about 80 athletes will compete in the competition.

According to him, Azerbaijan will be represented by 52 athletes in the tournament dedicated to the memory of honored coach Alexander Antipov. However, the team's leading athletes will not compete: "Unfortunately, our main athletes - Nazim Babayev and Kasgin Abbaszade in the long jump, Yekaterina Sariyeva in the triple jump - will not be able to perform in this competition. They have injuries and are being treated. Also, on the eve of this tournament, our under-20 athletes will participate in the "U-20 Balkan Championship" in Istanbul. For this reason, our leaders in that age group will miss the winter tournament."

Sultanzade said that they expect success from Lamiya Valiyeva, Alham Nagiyeva (both 60 m), Rustam Mammadov (triple jump), Fakhriyya Taghizade and Orkhan Aslanov (long jump) in the competition, which will be a license for the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games.

The general secretary said that they have obtained one license for the Olympics so far, but they hope to win two more.

It should be noted that the competition will be held at the Republican Olympic Center on February 2-3. Athletes from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia's Sakha Republic (Yakutia) will test their strength in the tournament.
