The third International Khankendi Ultramarathon has officially started, with Elnur Mammadov, Head of the Sports Department at Azerbaijan's Ministry of Youth and Sports, sharing his thoughts on the event.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Mammadov emphasized the enthusiasm surrounding the competition and described it as a significant occasion for Gabala.
"People have been gathering here since the early morning, and it is truly a wonderful event for the city," he said.
"The international ultramarathon is being held for the third year, and this is the second edition following the Gabala–Khankendi route. As you know, Gabala was Azerbaijan's Sports Capital last year, which is why the decision was made to start the race here. The city offers excellent facilities, organization and support."
Mammadov noted that the success of last year's event played an important role in the decision to maintain the same starting point.
"Last year's marathon was also very successful, so it was decided to continue the tradition. As you can see, that tradition is being maintained," he added.
The ministry official also highlighted the growing interest in the competition, pointing to the number of athletes taking part.
"This year, 97 participants have joined the race. We also have athletes representing five different countries," Mammadov stated.
He further explained that the ultramarathon will pass through several cities, with one of its main objectives being to promote sports and encourage physical activity across Azerbaijan's regions.
The 2026 edition covers a total distance of 192 kilometers from Gabala to Khankendi, divided into four stages.
