One of the leading figures in Azerbaijani athletics, Nazim Babayev, has returned to elite sport.
As İdman.Biz was informed by Maharram Sultanzade, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation, the triple jumper has reversed his decision to retire.
According to Sultanzade, Babayev has already begun preparations with the aim of qualifying for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The Azerbaijani athlete had previously struggled with a back problem, which contributed to his decision to step away from competition. However, after consulting doctors, Babayev received medical clearance to continue his career.
The 29-year-old has achieved some of the most significant results in the history of Azerbaijani athletics. He won gold in the triple jump at the European Athletics Indoor Championships, becoming the first Azerbaijani athlete to achieve such a result at the competition.
Babayev is also a two-time World University Games champion and a winner of the Islamic Solidarity Games.
Babayev announced his retirement at the Azerbaijan Athletics Championships in June this year. Just a few months later, however, the decorated athlete has changed his decision and will now attempt to earn a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
