UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has proposed a bid to host the 2042 FIFA World Cup, according to The Times.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing the British newspaper, the idea was raised during a meeting with city mayors at the Prime Minister’s new office in Manchester.
According to the report, Burnham is currently discussing the possibility of submitting a bid for the tournament with the Football Association (FA) and the Premier League.
England has hosted the FIFA World Cup only once, in 1966. That tournament remains a historic one for English football, as the national team defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time in the final at Wembley to win their first and, to date, only World Cup title.
If a bid is formally submitted and ultimately succeeds, the 2042 tournament would bring the World Cup back to England 76 years after the country first staged the competition.
