Baku will host the international ALUFAR IRONMAN 70.3 BAKU triathlon for the first time on September 5.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the event will be organised by Azerbaijan's Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Azerbaijan Triathlon Federation and the Baku City Circuit Operations Company.
A total of 1,500 athletes representing 62 countries are expected to compete in what will be the first IRONMAN 70.3 event in Azerbaijani sporting history. Baku will thus join the list of cities around the world hosting races from the prestigious international series.
The competition will consist of three disciplines – swimming, cycling and running. Athletes will begin with a 1.9-kilometre swim in the Caspian Sea before taking on a 90.1-kilometre cycling course through various parts of Baku.
The final stage will feature a 21.1-kilometre run along Baku Boulevard, with the finish line located near the Seven Beauties fountain.
The top 25 finishers in both the men's and women's categories will qualify for the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in the United States.
IRONMAN is one of the world's best-known international triathlon series. The first IRONMAN competition was held in Hawaii in 1978.
The programme will begin a day earlier, on September 4, with IRONKIDS and Fun Run events. Children aged 5-8 will compete over 500 metres, those aged 9-13 will cover one kilometre, while participants aged 14-17 will run two kilometres. A five-kilometre Fun Run will also be open to participants aged 18 and over.
Baku holds the status of World Capital of Sport in 2026, and hosting ALUFAR IRONMAN 70.3 BAKU will add another major international sporting event to the Azerbaijani capital's calendar.
