45 year old Venus Williams receives wild card for Australian Open

American tennis player Venus Williams has received a wild card to compete at the Australian Open, "İdman.Biz" reports, citing the tournament’s press service.

At 45, Williams could become the oldest participant in the history of the Australian Open, surpassing the record held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who played in the tournament at the age of 44.

Venus Williams is a five time Wimbledon champion and a two time winner of the US Open. She has also claimed 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles alongside her sister Serena. Williams won the Olympic gold medal in singles at Sydney 2000 and added three more gold medals in doubles with Serena in 2000, 2008 and 2012.

The Australian Open will take place from January 18 to February 1.
