Agaseyid Gasymov: "It was a very tough journey" – INTERVIEW

The interview with Agaseyid Gasymov, goalkeeper of the Azerbaijani national team, winner of the Mini-Football World Championship and the European University Futsal Championship:

- After winning the Mini-Football World Championship, you also celebrated victory at the European Championship. What are your impressions?

This year has been memorable and very emotional for me. After the success at the World Championship, achieving another victory at the European level was important both as motivation and responsibility. Every time I stepped on the field, I played thinking I was representing not only myself but also my Homeland. Seeing Azerbaijan’s name at the top and raising that flag is an indescribably magnificent feeling.

- Would it be fair to say that 2025 is the most successful year of your sports career?

Absolutely. I had some good results in previous years, but 2025 became a turning point in my career. The achievements we gained both individually and as a team made this year unforgettable for me.

- Which title is more valuable to you?

Actually, both have their own significance. The World Championship is a more global achievement and carries different responsibility. Winning the European Championship was a very tough journey requiring serious perseverance from us. But what matters most to me in this process is the unity, friendship, and team spirit we showed.

- It’s not easy to perform at the highest level in two different tournament formats. How did you manage it?

It really wasn’t easy. But behind every success lies perseverance, discipline, and continuous self-improvement. Our team worked for one goal: to win. The trust and support among us were our greatest weapons on this path.

- Moreover, you were named the best goalkeeper of the European Championship…

It’s a very proud feeling. This is not only my achievement but the result of the entire team’s hard work. I played a part in this success, and thanks to the support of my teammates, I was honored with the award. Such individual awards motivate a person to work even harder.

- How have the victories affected your social life? Considering that you are now more widely recognized…

Yes, being more recognized than before is a different feeling. Especially the support from young people and hearing “we are inspired by you” means a lot to me. This love and attention give me additional responsibility because I have become a role model for more people.

- We know you tried your hand in professional football as well, but your career there didn’t turn out successfully. What was the reason?

I wouldn’t say my career was unsuccessful. At 14, I already signed a contract with Qarabag’s main team. I just had to step away from big football due to some problems. It was fate.

- Do you want to return to professional football?

To be honest, I can’t say anything about that. My entire focus is now on mini-football.
