Formula 1 races are set to become shorter from the 2027 season.
As reported by İdman.Biz, under a decision by the Formula 1 Commission, the standard Grand Prix distance will be reduced from 305 km to 290 km. Depending on the circuit, this is expected to shorten races by approximately two or three laps.
The change is linked to amendments to the power unit and fuel consumption regulations for 2027.
At the same time, the current three-hour limit on the overall duration of a Grand Prix is set to be abolished. Under the existing regulations, a race must be concluded three hours after the start even if it has been interrupted by red flags.
The new regulations will replace the three-hour limit with a predetermined cut-off time by which all racing activity must be completed. However, the maximum two-hour limit for actual racing time on track will remain in place.
According to the FIA, the changes are intended to give fans the opportunity to see as much racing as possible at Grands Prix affected by lengthy interruptions.
The amendments still require final approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council before they can come into force.
