Less than a month remains until Formula 1 returns to Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Before heading to the Azerbaijani capital, the drivers will compete in two more rounds – at Monza on September 6 and Madrid on September 13. After that, the championship will move to the Baku City Circuit, where the roar of Formula 1 engines will once again fill the streets of the capital from September 24 to 26.
As reported by İdman.Biz, although two races remain before the trip to Baku, one clear leader has already emerged in the championship. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli will arrive at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the top of the standings.
The Italian currently appears out of reach of his closest rivals. Antonelli has won five races this season and collected 242 points. He holds a 57-point advantage over both his Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, who are tied on 183 points.
The size of Antonelli's advantage means that no rival can overtake him in the standings before the Baku round. Moreover, given his impressive form this season and the upcoming race on home soil at Monza, the Italian could potentially extend his advantage further.
Antonelli came close to the podium at last year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, finishing fourth. This time, he is expected to arrive with greater ambitions and will attempt to underline his championship-leading status on the streets of Baku. The unpredictable nature of the Baku City Circuit, however, could add another layer of intrigue to the battle.
Despite competing in only his second full Formula 1 season, Antonelli's remarkable progress has become an example of how quickly a young driver can establish himself at the highest level.
Experts believe that the new regulations, which require teams and drivers to adapt rapidly, have suited Antonelli's development perfectly. Rather than having to adapt to a mature generation of cars, he has developed alongside machinery that continues to evolve.
