Sergio Aguero: "I don’t see myself as a coach"

“Manchester City” legend Sergio Aguero has spoken about the possibility of trying himself in football management and coaching.

The Argentine forward, who scored 260 goals and is the club’s all-time top scorer, has often been asked since retiring from professional football in 2021 whether he might pursue a coaching career, Idman.biz reports.

Due to his legendary status at the club and close bond with the fans, rumors have circulated that he could one day return to Manchester in another role, such as a coach or executive.

Many of Aguero’s former teammates from the same era have already started coaching careers in Europe: for example, Vincent Kompany is currently with Bayern, and Pablo Zabaleta works with the Albanian national team. However, Aguero has focused primarily on media, business, and ambassadorial roles.

His success as a broadcaster and entrepreneur suggests that his post-playing path could differ from those who choose traditional coaching or management careers.

In recent months, discussions among City fans about the former player returning to the club have increased. Although Pep Guardiola’s contract runs until 2027, speculation continues about who might succeed him, with some fans even mentioning Kompany as a potential long-term candidate.

In an interview with “City Xtra,” Aguero clarified his current position on the matter: “I’ve said before: I don’t see myself as a coach. You have to prepare very seriously for that, and it’s a very responsible job.”

The former Argentina striker continued: “Maybe in the future, I could take on another role, such as in management. That’s still not certain. But I’m satisfied with my current projects, and there are many of them. Managing them is a big task, but it’s also very exciting.”

Currently, 37-year-old Aguero is staying away from a coaching career, focusing instead on business ventures, media appearances, and ambassadorial roles with “Manchester City” and other organizations.

Looking ahead, the door isn’t completely closed. Aguero’s openness to management suggests that he could take on a role in the club’s leadership or ambassadorial activities in the future.

“Manchester City” itself frequently involves former players in global football operations and within the City Football Group. In this way, Aguero could become part of this evolving story, just in a different role.
