Azerbaijani clubs reach 500th goal milestone in European competitions.

Azerbaijani clubs have scored their 500th goal in European club competitions, Idman.biz reports.

The milestone goal came during the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round match between Sabah and Slovenia’s Celje. Prior to this game, Azerbaijani clubs had netted 499 goals across 470 European matches. Pavol Safranko, who opened the scoring in the match, became the scorer of the 500th goal.

Azerbaijani clubs made their European debut in 1994. Since then, they have scored 122 goals in the Champions League, 294 in the Europa League (including the former UEFA Cup), 64 in the Conference League, 19 in the Intertoto Cup and 1 in the Cup Winners’ Cup. A total of 21 clubs from Azerbaijan have participated in European competitions.

The first-ever European goal by an Azerbaijani club was scored by Yadigar Suleymanov. The Kapaz player found the net against Austria Vienna on August 22, 1995, in a 1–5 loss in Vienna.
