Ukraine, one of Azerbaijan's opponents in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, has claimed a win after two consecutive defeats.
Sergiy Rebrov’s team defeated New Zealand 2-1 in Toronto as part of the Canadian Shield tournament. New Zealand has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, Idman.biz reports.
Both goals for Ukraine came in the second half, scored by Oleksiy Gutsulyak (Polissya) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (Arsenal).
After each of the four participating teams played two matches, Canada topped the standings with 4 points. New Zealand finished second with 3 points, Ukraine third also with 3 points, and Côte d'Ivoire placed fourth with 2 points.
Before beating New Zealand, Ukraine had suffered a 2-4 loss to Canada in the opening match of the tournament. Prior to that, they were defeated 0-3 by Belgium in a UEFA Nations League match in March.
It’s worth noting that Azerbaijan and Ukraine will face each other in their first World Cup qualifying match on September 9 in Baku.
