“Our national team played poorly against Latvia. We had a few chances but couldn’t capitalize. Compared to previous years, there is some improvement.
They’re controlling the ball better now, but they struggle to deliver in the final third,” said veteran footballer Ogtay Abdullayev in a statement to Sport24.az.
Idman.biz reports that Abdullayev shared his thoughts ahead of Azerbaijan’s upcoming match against Hungary:
“Football’s beauty lies in goals. Without scoring, it means nothing. In the past, our national team was full of foreign-born players. Now it’s mostly homegrown talent. Since the new management took over, we’ve seen some positive steps. But the player must have individual skill too. Wearing the national jersey means representing Azerbaijan’s flag. The players must feel that national pride.”
He added: “If they increase their control and create more dangerous chances against Hungary, we can win. But if they play poorly again, I’ll have nothing to say. Of course, the league just ended, and players seem tired, but that can’t be an excuse.”
The Azerbaijan vs. Hungary match will take place tomorrow at 20:00 at the Liv Bona Dea Arena.
