Ministry official: "World-class events prove Azerbaijan’s global reputation as a sports nation"

The WMF World Cup is yet another prestigious event hosted by Azerbaijan, showcasing the country’s growing influence in the global sports arena.

Speaking to AZERTAC, Gabil Mehdiyev, Head of the Public Relations Department at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasized the importance of the tournament currently underway in Baku, Idman.biz reports.

“The WMF World Cup stands among the major international events hosted by Azerbaijan. Over the years, our country has successfully organized prestigious competitions such as the inaugural European Games, the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games, the 15th European Youth Summer Olympic Festival, and the 42nd Chess Olympiad,” Mehdiyev noted.

He underlined that these events have played a pivotal role in establishing Azerbaijan’s reputation as a sports hub:

“Baku has hosted numerous continental and world championships across various disciplines, all organized at the highest standards. These accomplishments reinforce Azerbaijan’s image as a global sports nation. Minifootball enjoys immense popularity here, and it's a source of pride that our national team is recognized as one of the strongest not only in Europe but also worldwide.”

Mehdiyev expressed confidence that this championship will further promote the sport in the country and beyond:

“Hosting this world event will boost the development and popularity of minifootball in Azerbaijan. It also highlights our nation’s reliability in fulfilling international commitments, securing our place in the history of global sport as a trusted host of major competitions.”

He also reminded the public of other high-profile events Azerbaijan will host in 2025:

“The annual Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix continues to be one of the most prestigious sporting events raising our international profile. In addition, the 3rd CIS Games, set to take place across seven cities this year, will go down in history as the largest multi-sport event ever held outside the capital.”

The WMF World Cup will conclude on June 1.
