Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is currently in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery.
While the 27-year-old’s life is not in danger, doctors hope the medically induced coma will help regulate his heartbeat and restrict movement during recovery, Idman.biz reports.
The incident occurred during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City, when Awoniyi came on in the 83rd minute. After colliding with the goalpost, he suffered a torn intestine.
Despite visible discomfort, the Nigerian international continued playing. It was only after further examinations by the club’s medical team on Monday evening that the severity of the injury was revealed, prompting his immediate hospitalization.
Nottingham Forest has since announced that Awoniyi is now on the road to recovery following surgery.
