On the brink of relegation – ANALYSIS

This week’s Matchday 33 could bring clarity regarding the team set to be relegated from the Misli Premier League.

Sabail, currently sitting at the bottom of the standings, is standing at the edge of the abyss, Idman.biz reports.

The team, coached by Elvin Mammadov, is facing the threat of losing its place in Azerbaijan’s top football division with only three rounds remaining. Although Sabail may delay its potential return to the First Division, the situation is bleak. With 21 points and four matches left, the Baku side trails Kapaz by 7 points and Sumgayit by 9.

A Must-win

On May 3, the Sailors will visit Shamakhi. To stay alive for at least one more round, they must secure a victory. If Sabail takes all three points in Shamakhi, their hopes will stay alive into the following round. However, a slip-up will force them to anxiously watch the other matches scheduled for May 4.

If It’s a draw in Shamakhi...

It’s not just Sabail in danger—both Sumgayit and Kapaz also face the threat of relegation. Like Sabail, both clubs will play away this week, and both face top-tier opponents: Sumgayit plays against Qarabag, while Kapaz visits Neftchi.

If Sabail draws, and Sumgayit avoids defeat while Kapaz wins, the relegated team could already be determined.

Agony of defeat

A loss in Shamakhi would be devastating for Sabail—and a gift for Sumgayit, who would then mathematically secure their place in the Premier League without even playing. Kapaz would still need a win to ensure safety.
In short: if both Kapaz and Sumgayit win and Sabail loses, Sabail can start preparing for life in the First Division.

Sabail has competed in the Premier League since the 2017/18 season.
