EuroCup excitement in Azerbaijan: 28 seasons, 21 clubs, 5 tournaments - ANALYSIS

The 2024/25 season for Azerbaijani football will start tomorrow.

As per Idman.biz, this will happen in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

Zira will face Sheriff in Moldova. As our other representatives will participate in the competition from the II qualification stage, Rashad Sadygov's team will open the European Cup season.

The 2024/25 season is a jubilee for European football. Champions League, the oldest continental club tournament, is organized for the 70th time. With the 1955/56 season, the 70th football year of the European Cup begins.

Azerbaijan made its debut in continental club tournaments much later - after gaining independence and AFFA becoming a member of UEFA. This happened 39 years after the start of the European Cup.

The 31st European Cup season should have started for our country. But in the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons, Azerbaijan was left out of this excitement, so it is only the 29th time that Azerbaijan goes on a European "trip".

In the past 28 seasons, our teams played 442 European Cup games. Our representatives with 137 victories have drawn 137 times and lost 200 times. Our clubs, happy with 461 goals, released 648 balls.

This happened in 5 different tournaments. The European adventures that started with the UEFA Cup continued later in the Champions League and the Cup Winners' Cup, and the recent Intertoto Cup. Over time, the last two tournaments ceased to exist, and recently the Conference League was created. Moreover, the UEFA Cup has been called the Europa League for 15 years.

If we look at the previous 28 seasons, it can be divided into three periods. The years when our clubs were financially poor and did not win results have been long enough. Having achieved the first victory in the 3rd season was a great success. In those years, advancing was a big celebration.

In 2004-12, the clubs that strengthened their staff in exchange for big money started to pass the stage, even several rounds. The 3rd stage, the playoffs, also happened at that time.

After 2012, when Neftchi paved the way for the group in the European Cups, it seems that a new era has begun. Although no team could do it in one season, Qarabag, which received the baton from the Whites and Blacks, experienced group excitement 10 times in a row. Gabala joined them twice. Of course, during this period, the number of victories and goals during the season was many times higher.

21 Azerbaijani clubs represented in 5 different competitions in 28 seasons went to Europe. Once in the Champions League, 8 times in the Europa League, 1 time in the Conference League, Qarabag is our best representative on the continent. The people of Aghdam are more than twice ahead of their closest followers in the number of games, victories, and goals scored. In the list where Neftchi is second, Shamakhi is also in the "three". Having played more games than the latter, Gabala is behind them in the number of victories. 13 out of 21 teams experienced the joy of victory.
