Former Saudi sports minister Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad has declared that Cristiano Ronaldo is the only foreign player in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) whose enormous salary is justified.
Idman.Biz reports that Ronaldo brings unmatched global exposure to the league and the country, while many other foreign players are overpaid.
Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in January 2023 after leaving Manchester United, marking one of the most high-profile transfers in football history. Since arriving, he has not only excelled on the pitch but also boosted commercial growth, sponsorship interest, and inspired further signings in the league.
The Portuguese forward recently signed a two-year contract extension, reportedly earning $4 million per week, making him one of the highest-paid athletes in the world. While stars like Karim Benzema, Joao Felix, and Sadio Mane have also joined the SPL, Prince Abdullah emphasized that none have had the transformative effect Ronaldo has achieved.
The ex-minister stated: “The international renown that Ronaldo brings is unparalleled. He is the only foreign player whose impact justifies the level of his salary.” Ronaldo remains central to Saudi Arabia’s long-term football ambitions and global sports strategy.
