Argentina issues commemorative silver coin for 2026 World Cup - PHOTO/VIDEO

The Central Bank of Argentina has unveiled a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Idman.Biz, citing the bank’s press service, the reverse side of the coin depicts the trajectory of Diego Maradona’s famous solo run, which led to Argentina’s winning goal against England (2:1) in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The coin also features a football pitch, symbolizing the country’s sporting heritage. The obverse shows a ball passing through the coin, representing Argentina’s passion for football.

The coin is made of 925 silver, weighs 27 grams, and has a diameter of 40 mm. A domestic edition of 2,500 coins has been issued, each with a symbolic value of $10. Gold coins with the same design have been produced for international circulation.

Argentina is the reigning World Cup champion, having won the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The 2026 World Cup will take place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, featuring 48 teams for the first time.

The coin’s release coincides with the 40th anniversary of Maradona’s iconic goal against England and comes shortly before what would have been his 65th birthday on October 30. Maradona also helped Argentina finish as runners-up at the 1990 World Cup and win the 1993 Finalissima.
