Shakhriyar Mamedyarov: “Master classes are very important for junior chess players”

“Master classes” are very important for junior chess players.

Idman.biz, citing Report news agency, reports that Azerbaijani chess player Shakhriyar Mamedyarov made this statement while talking to journalists about juniors participating in the “master classes.”

He noted that he had wished for such meetings as a child: “Among those attending today’s event, there are many talented players. I hope we will see new names and stars in Azerbaijani chess. Such training is very important for children. I have high hopes for them. I wish them success in upcoming tournaments. I hope they will achieve the necessary results.”

The grandmaster added that the Azerbaijani chess team will strive to perform well at the European Championship, which will be held in Batumi, Georgia.

He shared his impressions regarding the tournament starting on October 5: “Over the years, chess has become a bit more challenging and increasingly age-dependent. After a certain age, competing with young players is also difficult. Our national team will not go to the European Championship as rating favorites for the first time in many years. This is a bit more comfortable for us because there has always been a huge pressure on us, and everyone expected only championships from us.”

Mamedyarov said the team consists of both young players and experienced grandmasters: “I have been with the national team for more than 24 years. I hope we will perform well. Azerbaijan has won the European Championship three times. This is a great achievement. We will try to perform well. Every chess player will do their best for this.”

The European Championship will continue until October 15.
