Sergey Lapin, director of the team of WBC, WBA, and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs), explained the boxer’s decision to relinquish the WBO title, Idman.Biz reports.
“Oleksandr vacated the belt to give young fighters a chance to compete for it. Let’s see how things develop next. Fabio Wardley versus Moses Itauma will be a great fight for both, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top,” Lapin said.
Earlier, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) announced that it had received official notification from Usyk’s team regarding the relinquishment of the title.
Interim champion Fabio Wardley, who was next in line to fight the Ukrainian, has become the full world champion.
