Azerbaijan secures two medals at U17 European Boxing Championships

Five Azerbaijani boxers recorded victories on the fifth day of the U17 European Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro, with two advancing to the semifinals and securing at least bronze medals.

As reported by İdman.Biz, citing the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation, three other national team members also progressed to the quarterfinals.

In the 48 kg category, Nihad Mammadli defeated Poland's Filip Borkowski 5-0 (30:27, 29:28, 29:28, 29:28, 29:28) in the round of 16. He will face Russia's Akmal Dustiyev in his next bout.

Ismayil Nasirzade (52 kg) also secured a unanimous decision victory, defeating Lithuania's Vakaris Kiseliunas 5-0 (30:27, 30:27, 30:27, 29:28, 29:28). His quarterfinal opponent will be Israel's Gleb Grinblat.

Mahammadali Istamov (57 kg) proved too strong for Ireland's Martin Donovan, winning by referee stoppage in the second round. He will meet Greece's Eleftherios Zournatzis for a place in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Sama Abbasova (66 kg) booked her place in the semifinals after defeating Israel's Alexandra Kerdol in the quarterfinals. The Azerbaijani boxer secured victory by referee stoppage in the second round and will next face Russia's Iustina Anufriyeva.

Khumar Jafarli (+80 kg) also advanced after defeating Romania's Alexandra Liteanu by unanimous decision, 5-0 (30:26, 30:26, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27). The European champion will face Ukraine's Sofia Opaliukh in the quarterfinals.

With Abbasova and Jafarli advancing to the semifinals, Azerbaijan has already guaranteed at least two bronze medals at the tournament.

The total number of Azerbaijani boxers who have reached the quarterfinal stage has now risen to 11.

The remaining quarterfinal bouts are scheduled for October 8, while the semifinals will take place on October 9.
