Qarabag after Zoubir: What have the Aghdam side lost and who can replace him?

Abdellah Zoubir's era at Qarabag has come to an end. On August 16, the club officially announced the termination of the contract with the 34-year-old, who had represented the Aghdam side since 2018.

As reported by Idman.Biz, the Frenchman's overall statistics are impressive: 369 appearances, 79 goals and 96 assists. That amounts to 175 goal contributions – almost one for every two matches he played.

But the numbers explain only part of what Gurban Gurbanov's team have lost. Over eight years, Zoubir developed from a quality wide player into one of those footballers through whom the Aghdam side could change the nature of their attacking play during a match.

Describing Zoubir simply as a left winger would be an oversimplification. For example, Spanish newspaper AS, analysing Qarabag's squad during last season's Champions League campaign, described the Frenchman as a technically gifted attacking midfielder capable of starting attacks from the left or operating as a traditional No. 10. In Total Football Analysis' tactical review of the match against Napoli, Zoubir was even identified as an advanced playmaker in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

This versatility was one of his greatest strengths. Zoubir could receive the ball near the touchline, move into the half-space, appear between the opposition's lines and participate in short combinations just outside the penalty area. His presence therefore allowed Gurbanov to alter the positioning of his attacking unit without making a substitution.

It is also significant that the Frenchman continued to carry a considerable workload during the current European campaign. He played 309 minutes and scored once in four Europa League qualifying matches before adding another 171 minutes across two Conference League games.

In other words, Zoubir featured in all six of Qarabag's European matches this season and spent 480 minutes on the pitch. Those are hardly the numbers of a player who had gradually been phased out of the starting line-up before his departure.

One of the characteristics of Qarabag's attacking structure in recent seasons was that Zoubir did not operate in isolation. His partnership with Elvin Jafarguliyev on the left flank was particularly important.

AS described the Azerbaijan international as a full-back who constantly pushes forward and delivers quality balls from wide areas. Zoubir's ability to move inside from the touchline created space for Jafarguliyev to make those forward runs.

Zoubir's partners changed over the years, but the principle remained the same. One of the clearest examples came in the historic Champions League victory over Benfica in Lisbon.

The decisive third goal began with Oleksii Kashchuk combining with Zoubir. The Ukrainian played a one-two with the Frenchman and finished the move after receiving the return pass.

That episode illustrates a part of Zoubir's value that cannot always be found in the goals or assists columns: his ability to act as the connecting player in a decisive attacking sequence.

If several matches are to be chosen to define Zoubir's European years with Qarabag, the away game against Braga in February 2024 would surely be among the first.

The Aghdam side stunned their Portuguese opponents with a 4-2 victory, with Zoubir scoring twice, in the 54th and 69th minutes. His performance was so impressive that UEFA named him the Europa League Player of the Week.

In August 2025, Zoubir scored one of the most important goals in the club's recent history.

Qarabag conceded first in the second leg of their Champions League qualifying play-off against Ferencvaros, but Leandro Andrade and Zoubir both scored before half-time. Despite losing the match 3-2, the Aghdam side won the tie 5-4 on aggregate and reached the Champions League main stage for only the second time in their history.

Another symbolic moment followed in the league phase. In the home match against Copenhagen, Zoubir reacted quickest after Pedro Bicalho's shot struck the post and opened the scoring. Qarabag won 2-0 and had two victories from their opening two Champions League matches.

There is one common thread running through these performances: Zoubir was capable of contributing in completely different ways – finishing a counterattack, appearing in the right place inside the penalty area, operating between the lines or helping a teammate continue an attacking combination.

Who can replace Zoubir?

If the question is considered purely in terms of position, Gurban Gurbanov has several options. But at this stage, it would be premature to suggest that any player has already demonstrated the ability to replace Zoubir across the full range of his functions.

Jaly Mouaddib appears to be the first candidate. The 25-year-old Frenchman is already being used regularly in European competition.

He played 142 minutes and scored once in four Europa League qualifying matches before adding 162 minutes and another goal across two Conference League appearances. That gives him six matches, 304 minutes and two goals.

It was Mouaddib who opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the second leg against Dynamo Kyiv, setting Qarabag on their way to a 2-0 victory.

His main advantage is that the adaptation process has already begun. Mouaddib is not arriving after Zoubir's departure – he has already spent several weeks within the team's playing system and accumulated European minutes.

However, the comparison between Mouaddib's 304 minutes and Zoubir's 480 also highlights another point: right up until his final match, the veteran Frenchman remained the more prominent figure.

The second option is Renaldo Cephas. The Jamaican can operate on the left side of the attack and has already scored during the current Europa League qualifying campaign.

He played 122 minutes and scored once in four matches in the competition, before receiving another 80 minutes across two Conference League games.

Qarabag, however, do not necessarily need to find another Zoubir. Gurbanov could instead choose to distribute his former leader's responsibilities among several players.

Mouaddib or Cephas could receive more playing time on the left flank, while some of the work between the lines and in organising attacks could be transferred to Kady Borges and Joni Montiel.

In that scenario, it would not be a case of replacing one footballer with another, but rather of changing the structure of Qarabag's attacking game.

Zoubir's departure has also come at a particularly sensitive moment. Qarabag will face Twente in Enschede in the first leg of their Conference League play-off on August 20, with the return match scheduled for August 27 in Baku.

Gurbanov's immediate task, therefore, is not so much to identify a new leader for the years ahead as to preserve the mechanisms that are already working.

Mouaddib and Cephas have already gained European experience. Kady remains a player through whom Qarabag can build their combination play. Jafarguliyev can provide width on the left, while Montiel offers another option as an attacking midfielder.

The squad gives the coaching staff enough alternatives to redistribute Zoubir's responsibilities.

There are, however, things that cannot be acquired in a few training sessions: eight years of understanding Gurbanov's demands, hundreds of matches alongside the same teammates and the ability to make decisions within the system almost automatically.

That is why the true impact of Zoubir's departure may not necessarily be reflected in the number of chances Qarabag create. It could instead become visible in the details: how easily the team play through pressure, who receives the ball between the lines, who controls the tempo of attacks on the left and who assumes responsibility during the difficult moments of European matches.

The first answers will come in the tie against Twente.
