Ten Hag explains why Ronaldo could no longer meet Manchester United's demands

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reflected on his difficult relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, explaining why the Portuguese forward struggled to meet his expectations during their time together at Old Trafford.

As reported by İdman.Biz, citing The Touchline on X, the Dutch coach also praised Real Madrid's ability to recognize when it is time to part ways with aging stars.

"That is actually Real Madrid's great strength. They always know when to say goodbye to players. Real Madrid recognize when a player's level is declining, and they let them go at a moment when, to the outside world, they still appear to be at their peak. But in reality, they can no longer deliver the same performances," Ten Hag said.

The former United manager explained that he had clearly outlined Ronaldo's role and responsibilities when he arrived at the club in 2022.

"When I started at Manchester United, I explained to Ronaldo how we were going to play, what his role would be, what I expected from him and what he could expect from me and the team. But ultimately, you have to deliver the performances yourself," he stated.

Ten Hag suggested that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was no longer capable of maintaining the physical demands required to compete at the highest level.

"He could no longer push himself through the pain, give everything every day and train at maximum intensity to stay fit. And if you are not fit in the Premier League, the Champions League or the Portuguese national team, then you simply have no chance," the Dutchman added.

Ronaldo and Ten Hag worked together at Manchester United in 2022, but their relationship deteriorated amid disagreements over the forward's playing time and role in the team.

The Portuguese star eventually left Old Trafford in November 2022 following a controversial interview in which he publicly criticized the club and its manager.

Ronaldo, now 41, currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
