Real Madrid suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Betis in the fourth round of La Liga, Idman.Biz reports.
After the match, Mourinho clarified why he had described his players as "naive", contrasting their behaviour with that of the opposition.
"Why did I call the players naive? Maybe I didn't express myself very well. The team worked incredibly hard. They gave everything. The comment about 'naivety' was in the sense that the Betis players tried to influence the referee's decisions, while the Real Madrid players didn't do that in situations that clearly deserved a yellow card.
"I'll give you an example: in the first minute of the match, a Betis player stepped on Valverde's foot. That's a yellow-card offence. And what does Valverde do? He stays on his feet and doesn't even go down.
"At the same time, the Betis players exaggerated every foul so much that you could have thought they urgently needed an ambulance," Mourinho said after the match.
The defeat was Real Madrid's first of the new La Liga season and ended their unbeaten start to the campaign.
