The press service of the International Skating Union (ISU) has issued a statement regarding the rejection of figure skater Veronika Zhilina’s transfer to the Azerbaijani national team.
It had previously been reported that Zhilina applied to compete under the Azerbaijani flag, but the ISU did not approve the transfer, Idman.biz reports.
The Figure Skating Federation of Russia also did not give consent for the 17-year-old Zhilina, who had already obtained an Azerbaijani passport, to change her sporting nationality.
The website Vseprosport.ru presented the ISU statement as follows: "The ISU received an official request from the Azerbaijan Winter Sports Federation to change the membership status of Veronika Zhilina, who previously competed under the Russian flag, so that she could represent Azerbaijan in future ISU competitions. In accordance with ISU regulations, the request was reviewed by the ISU Council. After thoroughly examining the submitted documents and the surrounding circumstances, the ISU Council decided to reject the request."
